“This Feels Good!”
Exclaimed David. David had just received prayer for healing of his migraines and was encountering the Holy Spirit fresh. My friend and I had gone over to his house in the 810 Project neighborhood to speak to his father-in-law, the owner. We felt led to proclaim God’s love over him and his home. [This is a high traffic home, with people constantly coming in and out or just hanging out on the porch. And they are constantly drunk. From early morning to late at night they are out with their Colt 45. ]
On this occasion the owner wouldn’t come out, which is highly unusual. David eventually came out to talk with us, and when we were finished he couldn’t stop smiling. He was encouraged to join us anytime he sees us.
Every Thursday afternoon, friends come over to 810 to meet for prayer and encounter God’s heart for our neighborhood. We spend time in worship and in prayer and strive to listen to His direction for the day. Then, we go out and share His love with our community. This past week, He led about 8 of us to prayer walk our neighborhood and chat with neighbors while others stayed back to pray for neighbors and distribute free clothes. We made a plan to meet up at a local grocery/corner store where someone was shot over the weekend, then divided into teams and were on our way.
Every one of us had an experience with God. He is alive and will direct our steps as we make ourselves available to Him. One team went down the business street and got to pray with store owners and customers. One customer had a deep encounter with God and gave his heart back to God. Another team went down a center street and prayed with over 10 of our neighbors. As they walked, they stopped and began conversations that led to prayer and allowed them to experience God’s love again.
One lady was walking past our free clothes stand, and within minutes was in tears as she received prayer for her family and strength. She was moved by God’s love for her and her family.
My partner and I took a longer route to the store and met/prayed with many along the way. One that sticks out is Ken. Ken was on his porch getting ready to listen to music. We chat for a bit and as we finish praying for him, he can’t shake his smile. Shaking his head, he proclaims “I just can’t believe it!” Apparently, he was just asking God for a sign right before we walked up to him. “God is real,” he proclaims.
The Corner Store
Over the weekend, 2 brothers were in an argument with their mother outside the local corner store. A third party entered the argument, and before long the situation escalated and a gun was fired; hitting the mother in the chest.
This is the store we met at. We talked and prayed with customers and workers; praying for peace and healing in our neighborhood. As we leave, we gather in a circle for prayer in the parking lot. As prayer begins, 4-5 customers join our circle and begin crying out for our community. We are truly salt and light, and this challenged me to be more salty and more light-y. God’s people are scattered throughout this neighborhood. What would it look like if all of our lights shined brightly and continuously? What would happen to the darkness if all of our lights accurately displayed God’s heart to the world around them? I want to display God’s heart. I want every neighbor to know how much they are loved by their Father in Heaven. I want them to see how Good and Kind He is. He is patient with us, not wanting any of us to suffer.
Back at the House
As we return to the house, another friend who stayed behind to finish some window improvements returns with a big smile. Apparently while we were out, another neighbor came running over in distress. He and his buddy were messing around and cracked a big hole in their Aunt’s wall. They had the fear of the Auntie on them.
“It just so happens” that another neighbor was working on his house that day and had some sheet rock. My friend repairs their wall and while doing so, shares God’s heart for them. They are cut to the heart and were desiring more information. While they are chatting, their Aunt returns. She receives the Gospel too.
Also, “it just so happens” that this is the same home that C (from the block in earlier posts) was staying! This is the lady he was staying with upon moving to MN. I had helped him getting to work and given him a few Bibles when he came over for study and prayer. I hadn’t seen him in over a week and was getting worried. Apparently, he was stopped on the way to work and had a warrant from another state out for his arrest. This was shocking and disappointing news as he was doing so well. Please pray that we can locate him…he’s not showing up in the county jail log and I’m not sure where else to look.
This is what we want
We want a house of:
- Worship: As we meet God’s heart, He changes ours. We need to know His heart for the world around us.
- Prayer: As we hear His heart, we pray it back to Him. Prayer changes the atmosphere. “Your Kingdom Come, Your Will be Done.” His Kingdom is of Light. When His Light comes, Darkness must flee.
- Discipleship: The goal of our teaching is Love (1 Tim 1:5) We want those we encounter to be set free from darkness and experience the Fellowship that comes from walking in the Light. To walk in the Light takes a transformation, and our minds must be renewed in His Word. We aim to walk with our neighbors in the Light.
This verse is True:
16“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
18“There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.20All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.g”
