This is North Minneapolis.

There is violence here. A few weeks ago there was a traffic stopping brawl in front of our house w/ 20+ teens and parents swinging fists, crutches, and anything else available.  Crime happens.

There are widows and orphans here.  The past three nights, we received knocks on our door at 9:30 pm from a hungry 7 and 8 year old.  Their mom moved a mile up the road, but there friends are still here, so they wander the streets until their friends have to go to bed, then come to us looking for food and a ride home.  I look at my own 9 and 7 year old, and I can’t imagine having them on these streets all alone.

There are obvious signs of hopelessness, depression and addiction on many faces.

This is right where Jesus wants us.

In truth, you’ll find the same symptoms in the suburbs, in estates, on golf courses, or anywhere else you happen to be.  Some of us are better at masking these issues than others, but the problems are still there.  The problem is sin.  The solution is the Love of God demonstrated on the cross in Christ (He became sin for us that we may become the Righteousness of God!!!), and manifest through the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Yesterday on our outreach, I had a long talk with a slightly drunk and elderly neighbor from East Africa.  He stated how he and other Muslims love Jesus as a prophet.  I asked if he followed the Koran well enough to go to heaven.  He admitted that he would be going to hell because of his sin, and we discussed how Jesus came as the Son of God to redeem us.  I shared the story of the treasure in the field and the pearl of great price.  Jesus found value in him to the extent that He gave up His heavenly rights to become a man and purchase us for Himself.  YOU ARE THE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE! We must know our value to God.

As Christ followers, we have been given a ministry of reconciliation.  Whether in N Mpls, Edina, Woodbury, or wherever. Our call is to follow Christ with our whole lives.  Christ came to seek and save the lost.  Biblical examples of what happens to people who meet Christ give us hope.  Zaccheus, Matthew, the demoniac, and many others met Christ and stopped sinning because they encountered Righteousness.  I look at my own life.  I was opposed to God; angry and bitter.  Then He met me and filled me with His Holy love.  I can’t be the same. His love compels me.

We want to thank you for sending us here.  This is where God wants us.  Your prayers and gifts increase our faith and spur us on.  God is able to exceed all of our expectations.  We have countless stories of His goodness and provision, and we are indebted to you. We minister to the needs around us in the following ways:

prayerWe don’t wrestle against flesh and blood, but against rulers powers and authorities in the heavenly realms.  Our prayers have divine power to demolish these strongholds.  This is why we pray.

  • Every Monday, 10-12 at JHOP – (Justice House of Prayer)
  • Every Thursday 10-12 at 810
  • 1st and 3rd Tues at JHOP
  • Every other Sunday night at Freemont house

Prayer makes the difference.  Anything else we would try without prayer first is completely pointless.

Every Thursday from 12:30-3, we walk the streets of North Minneapolis; talking to neighbors about the Kingdom of God. We mostly listen.  In the past couple weeks, I’ve met a neighbor from Chicago who loves cats and really knows how to cook; a man from Memphis who was jumped by 10 teens the night before, a young man from Chicago who moved to escape the violence and is looking for work, a man from Omaha whose kids were murdered, an old neighbor who lives not far from us again and is in a fight to keep her kids, many, many, many, many more.  Each has their own story.

It’s easy to look at someone and judge their behavior or appearance. It’s another to listen to them, hear their story, gain empathy for their circumstances and ask for God’s heart to be revealed.  I love these neighbors; not for what I can get or give them but because God has placed His love for His kids into my heart.

Evangelism isn’t about ‘winning souls for Jesus’.  It’s about asking for God’s heart to be revealed for His lost kids; and walking with Him in that brokeness.

That being said, we have had 2 people publicly repent of their sins and ask Christ for forgiveness in the past month.  Now the work of discipleship continues with them.  We need more laborers!

This is our weekly youth Bible study  It’s been a joy to move in to the Antioch home on Freemont (4 blocks from 810).  Every Thursday night, we have about 15-20 youth from the neighborhood come over for games, homework help, food and Bible fellowship.

In addition, we often have kids coming over the just hang out and play with our kids or chat.  For mothers day, we built and planted raised garden beds with the kids.  They also had an opportunity to decorate a flower pot and take it home.  It will be fun to tend the garden with them throughout the Summer and watch what we worked on grow.

We continue to partner with other ministries dedicated to seeing the Name of Jesus lifted High in N. Mpls.

  • Camp Good News – we speak and help out with their youth program at Folwell park
  • Trinity Works:  -Many of our volunteers come through their Messenger Boot Camp.  This is an 8 week intensive class engaging our hearts in Spirit led evangelism.  Miah is going through it right now and it’s bearing good fruit in our lives.
  • LOVE MPLS: -Trinity Works is also sponsoring a large scale outreach in June called Love Mpls.  This will combine 24 hour worship with 24 hour evangelism for 1 whole week (June 21-28).  The combination of worship, prayer, and evangelism creates an atmosphere of intentional Christian community and expression of God’s heart for our city.  Its going to be awesome!
  • Justice House of Prayer:  -We continue to lead worship and intercession sets for this house of prayer.

Our house on Freemont is often used as a neighborhood hangout for the kids.  They come to play and just be kids.  As I mentioned earlier, we often get knocks on the door late at night.  We use these as opporunities to share God’s heart and His story.  For the 2 boys in particular, their moms house is now about 5 minutes away by car.  I use those 5 minutes to share another Bible story: Shadrack, Meshack and Abendigo seem to be a crowd favorite so far.  I want these kids to know the love of Christ and the reality of His Power.

  1. God bless you for being hands and feet. It’s is true that lawns and cars mask much hurt in the burbs. Pastor Fenton’s church in Blaine still may be on a rotation of overnight shelter for suburban homeless families, there is a lot of “couch jumping” north of 694.
