Walking in Darkness

Isaiah 50:10 …” If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God.”

We are walking in darkness.  Last week, there were 28 reports of shots fired just in our neighborhood.   The 810:Project was broken into and tools were stolen.  My bike was stolen from our personal garage.  There is a palpable sense of darkness, perversion and hatred on a day-to-day basis.

However, “the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” ~Mark 4

This is what we believe and what we contend for: that the people around us would see a great Light.  His Name is Jesus.  He is the Way, the Truth, the Life.  Our prayer is that our neighbors would see a risen savior and fall in love with Him.  This may seem impossible at times; but we trust in the Lord and rely on our God.  When we don’t see the darkness clearing, we continue to trust, believe and pray.

Matthew 24:12 “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”

Miah and I are walking through difficult circumstances and misunderstanding with some of our neighbors. We don’t want our love to grow cold.  We want to stay in love with Jesus, and He has put us here to love our neighbors.  It’s easy to love those who think and act like us; it’s harder to love those who are different.  This is the ministry of reconciliation and it involves a cross.

This is reconciliation: Christ became sin for us [2 Cor 5:17].  He gave up His rights and died so that we can be reconciled to God [Phil 2].  This is one of the reasons we are here: to die.  The cross always involves death, and I’m learning to die in new ways that I thought I had already surrendered.  I thought I was humble and full of grace; now I’m learning I need more of Him…new levels of death and mercy are needed in my life to learn how to love others the way He loves me.  I was opposed to Him, yet He loved me anyway because He is LOVE.

Would you join us in prayer for Grace and Mercy to be released in North Minneapolis?  Below is a recap of what’s been going on and what’s coming up for the 810:Project.  We always look forward to hearing from you!

North Border to Northside partnerships

We had a team from Stephen/Argyle come down for a few daysand help do work on the 810 house and our partner Antioch home.  It was an honor to work with this group of teens as we re-stained the deck, dug trenches, sheet rocked, cleared debris and more.  One of the highlights for me was having them help with our other partners Camp Good News meeting Sundayafternoon.  It was great to watch the 12 kids immerse themselves in a different culture and commit to the helping and learning process.  Thank you First Lutheran Church of Stephen!

Antioch House:

At our partner Antioch home (where we currently live), Miah’s been having weekly backyard Bible studies with the neighborhood girls.  Each girl was able to make their own journal, read and study the Word as well as stay for lunch.

A donor has supplied 3 meals a week for the kids, so in addition to our weekly BBQ, we are meeting with the kids 4 times/week.

We were also blessed to be able to take a group of kids to a recent Twins game.  It’s wonderful to get to know the kids more outside the context of programming.  We’re praying that the seeds of these relationships will bear fruit in another 10 years as they face graduation and adulthood.  These kids are the powerful ones, who will bring Light and Truth to their families and our neighborhoods.  Please pray with us that the Gospel will be full of power in their lives, and Christ will become real to them by the Holy Spirit’s revelation.

Antioch is gearing up for a back to school event.  We are hoping to provide 200 backbacks to the area youth.  If you’d like to help in that effort, click here.

810 Construction Progress

The sheet rock is done! We are now in the mudding and sanding process.  This is probably my least favorite part of the process, so pray for grace 🙂

Please pray for provision for:

  • flooring (tile),
  • cabinets,
  • doors,
  • shower tile.

Much of the hardware has been donated by Weld plumbing.  Someone else has donated the rehab of the downstairs hardwood.  The upstairs carpet has been supplied by another.  God’s people are building His house, and it’s exciting to see.  Thank you for all of your prayers, support and gifts!

We are hoping to ramp up our efforts to be done with everything by Sept.  We can use as many hands as are available.  Let us know if it’s on your heart to help sand, mud, lay tile, or just come to check out the progress and pray!

One Last Thing

Jesus loves you.  Jesus loves your neighbor.  His strategy to show them His love is You.  This is called the Great Commission.  You should be involved:)  Our partners Trinity Works are hosting another Boot Camp starting Sept 6 at Redeeming Love in Maplewood.  This 8 weeks will propel you into the burning heart of God for the lost around you.  Check out their website and sign up!

We couldn’t do what we do with out your prayers and encouragement.  We pray for you often, and hope to be a blessing to you as well.  Let us know how we can help you!
