For those that can’t read sarcasm, the title is meant to be sarcastic.
I am a Born Again Christ follower and I have some words to share about this whole election thing and what it means for our country. I’ve watched this election cycle devolve over the past year from people within the Church hating Trump, to him becoming the nominee and many of us saying we wouldn’t vote for such a man. Then finally over the past months, the rhetoric changed to encourage all of us to support the platform. “Don’t vote for the man, vote for the platform.”
POLITICS and the CHURCH
I honestly don’t have too much to say about the election itself. My words are more to the Church of America:
We suck. We need to take the plank out of our own eye, stop looking to an election to validate and enact our faith, and get our own hearts right with God.
If the American Church were really about “Family Values”, and politics was the answer we would have done something to bring change in the 1990’s. Republican <> Jesus. Last I looked around, the moral fiber of our country is not any better than it was 20 years ago. Some would argue it’s gotten worse. Abortion is still here. Gay marriage is here. Greed is here. Factions, war, envy, jealousy, discord are here. I’m talking about the Church that was bought with Jesus’ blood. We covet, kill and fight and blame the other guy for our own problems.
Take out our Planks
It’s time we take the plank out of our own eye and look at ourself rightly. Our God is Comfort. We have replaced Jesus with Comfort. Jesus is not our God, our stomach is.
Phil 3:18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.
This verse isn’t about THEM. It’s about you and me who call ourselves the Church. OUR MIND IS SET ON EARTHLY THINGS!!! We worship at the altar of convenience and have no interest in really loving the Lord with ALL of our heart, soul, mind and strength. Much less loving our neighbor as ourself. These are ideals that we all agree upon in Sunday service, but don’t dare to live out in our culture. That would require pain and sacrifice, and after all; didn’t Jesus die to take away all that? Didn’t His punishment make the way for me to have peace and comfort?
the Sin of Sodom
Remember Sodom? That evil place where all the gays lived and God reigned down fire to kill them all? Do you remember why God judged this city?
Ezekiel 16: “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.”
Church: we are arrogant, overfed and unconcerned. The majority of us do not help the poor or needy, but rather judge, despise and displace them. The platform that Trump ran on isn’t really about ending abortion or whatever other reason we’re told; it’s about trying to keep us comfortable.
We are getting exactly what we want. Do we really want to end abortion? Why? Would you like to welcome young ladies into your home, adopt unwanted babies and raise them as your own? Abortion and other social/political/moral sins are still here not because of the failure of our public servants, but because of the failure of the Church to roll up our sleeves and get UNCOMFORTABLE.
Church, please wake up! We are not doing the things we should be doing. The time is nearer now than when we first believed. It is time to put on the mind of Christ:
1 Peter 4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.
Phil 2: “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
Ps 45: 3 In your majesty, ride out to victory, defending truth, humility, and justice. Go forth to perform awe-inspiring deeds! [Jesus]
Are we ready for all out obedience to our Lord? Are we ready to abandon our comforts, surrender our rights in pursuit of Justice, Humility and Truth? Are we willing to make ourself nothing for the sake of the cross? Are we ready to suffer with the broken and needy?
We need to stop looking to politicians to validate our faith or put our faith into action for us. This election means nothing. What matters now is “Faith expressing itself in love.” We have neither faith in the real Crucified and Resurrected Jesus nor love for our neighbor.
Faith without works is DEAD
James 2 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder.
This is what I mean: it’s easy for us to say “Jesus is my President,” vote for someone who aligns with our ideals (even if we don’t like him/her), then go about our life eating, drinking, and making merry; and think we’re living out the fulfillment of what Jesus did on the cross.
It’s time to think more seriously about what it means to call ourself a Christian. We talk about Jesus coming back like it’s going to be this awesome event that swoops us up into the sky where we can enjoy more lollipops and get back massages because our life here was so hard. The Bible says differently:
Amos 5 Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you long for the day of the Lord? That day will be darkness, not light.
Zeph 1 The great day of the Lord is near—near and coming quickly.
The cry on the day of the Lord is bitter; the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.
15That day will be a day of wrath—a day of distress and anguish,a day of trouble and ruin,a day of darkness and gloom,a day of clouds and blackness—16a day of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the corner towers.
Do you understand how great and terrible that Day will be? Do we have any concern for the world around us? Is Jesus looking forward to punishing all those ‘sinners?!’ Come on! Jesus does not delight in the punishment of the wicked. He is patient with us,not wanting any to suffer but all to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. How will they hear if we don’t tell them? How can they hear “God is Love” based on what is coming out of our mouth or the way we treat each other? Is our rhetoric and lifestyle leading people into relationship with our King?
I’m not saying we all need to hit ourselves with a stick and try to make our life more miserable: but we have access to the Throne of Grace AND the riches of this world. How do we use them? Are we using them to fulfill God’s plans on this earth? Do people know us by our love for them or our love for ourselves?
James 5 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you.2Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.a 6You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.
What’s the Point?
Stop trying to make America “great again.” Our Kingdom is not of this world. I’m not saying to ignore politics or not vote; but we need to seek the Lord while He may be found. If you find yourself offended at reading this, or saying things like: “I fast! I pray! I go to church!” you might be part of the problem.
What I’m trying to communicate is more fasting, more praying, more churchy stuff without true repentance means absolutely nothing to God and will not effect our country in anyway.
Is 58: They come to the Temple every day and seem delighted to learn all about me. They act like a righteous nation that would never abandon the laws of its God. They ask me to take action on their behalf, pretending they want to be near me. 3 ‘We have fasted before you!’ they say ‘Why aren’t you impressed? We have been very hard on ourselves, and you don’t even notice it!’ “I will tell you why!” I respond. “It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves. Even while you fast you keep oppressing your workers.4 What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me.
…6 “No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people 7 Share your food with the hungry and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. 8 “Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.9 Then when you call, the Lord will answer. ‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply.
Seek Jesus while He may be found. Ask Him to search your heart and expose every hidden motive. Pray with David in Ps 139: “Search me and know me, OH God! See if there is any wrong way in me and lead me in the way of everlasting…”
Our nation needs a church that look, walks, talks and smells like Jesus. We currently look, walk, talk and smell like the ‘world’, meaning our thought life and speech more closely resembles our carnal nature than Christ.
Repent for what?!!!
We have made our Stomach/Comfort our God. We have rejected the Living One, our Precious Cornerstone; and have built our foundation on wealth, prosperity, entertainment and ‘worldly’ peace. I don’t care if you make $10/hr or $100/hr; the pursuit of getting comfortable is what motivates us. [notice i keep saying ‘us’, ‘we’. I’m not better than any of you, and that isn’t what this post is about. I want us all together to look like JESUS.]
As a Church of Jesus, this should not be so. We need to repent. And by that, I don’t mean: “start doing more good works.” No! More good works without the Love of Christ in our hearts is like clanging gongs and resounding cymbals around our neighbors ears.
We, as a collective Church need to STOP. LISTEN. REPENT. TURN FROM OUR WICKED WAYS (not the ‘worlds’ wicked ways…OURS!) [I was temped to post a photo of Vanilla Ice and say: “stop. collaborate and listen…” but i didn’t.]
1 Cor 3: 1Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?
Rev 3 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
As a church, our problem isn’t our public policy. Our problem is the same as Isreal’s was in Jeremiahs day:
For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me–the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!
We have abandoned Jesus, the fountain of Living Water. We have dug cisterns that cannot hold water. Entertainment and possessions do not satisfy or last. They are broken and unreliable for lasting peace and joy.
We have moral decay in the Church. Fleshly answers will not solve a spiritual problem. This isn’t about trying harder. This is about stopping entirely, and asking the Spirit of the Living God to resurrect His Body (the Church) in this hour.
Galatians 3 You foolish Galatians [Americans]! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?
We need to be Born Again.
We need to make Jesus Great Again.
