Mark 3: 13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14He appointed twelvea that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15and to have authority to drive out demons.

I met an old acquaintance on outreach yesterday.  As we got to talking, he seemed unable to form a really clear sentence and was complaining of chest and head pressure.  He had just come from the hospital for symptoms of asthma and seemed to be really struggling both physically and spiritually.

We took some time to pray.

After the first prayer, I stopped to ask how he was feeling.  “Better.  It’s good to be reminded about God’s light and fellowship,” he said.  But then continued on to talk more about how his chest and head were under pressure.  I asked if he thought it may be spiritual or if it felt like a physical condition; because at this point I still really couldn’t make much sense of what he was saying.  He thought there may be a spiritual reason.

As we prayed a second time, God’s glory fell.  We simply began declaring truth about who Jesus is and scripture:

“Thank you Jesus that your love is unending.  You never leave us or forsake us.  All you promises are true, you don’t change like a shifting shadow.  You are light, in you is no darkness at all.  Thank you that we can walk in your light, and that we can find mercy in grace in our time of need…”

We prayed this way in the parking lot for several minutes, raising our hands and worshiping Jesus, declaring His wonders to the world around us.  As we finished, tears were rolling down his face.  I asked how he was feeling, and he responded with a resounding shout of victory!

Why bring this up?

The answer to our oppression is praise.  We do have an enemy, and there are spiritual forces opposed to us.  Satan has come to steal, kill, and destroy; but Jesus came that we could have LIFE and LIFE ABUNDANTLY!!!  Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil.

My friend testified that it felt like he had a chain around his brain that was unwrapped and released.  His chest felt open and clear.  Troubles without and within can try to slow us down.  When we feel weary and oppressed is the BEST TIME TO PRAISE!

  1. This is great, I was just listening to something about this on the radio, and it’s good to see it in writing.
